Lahore:
The Punjab government has decided to impose an electricity duty on consumers using more than 500 kVA of power.
According to Express News, the Punjab Finance (Amendment) Bill 2025 has been approved by the provincial assembly without being referred to any committee. Under the new bill, industrial and commercial users consuming more than 500 kVA will now be subject to an electricity duty.
The bill specifies that the electricity duty will be charged at 4 paisa per unit. Industrial and commercial consumers using up to 500 kVA will be exempt from this duty, while institutions operating generators larger than 500 kVA will be brought under the tax net.
According to the bill, all domestic consumers will remain completely exempt from the electricity duty.
For industrial and commercial users connected to the national grid, the duty will be collected through DISCOs (Distribution Companies), whereas private power users will pay through electric inspectors.
The proposed law applies exclusively to the commercial and industrial sectors. It also includes amendments to the Punjab Finance Act 1964, and the bill now awaits final approval from the Governor of Punjab.
