Russia Tests New Nuclear-Powered Underwater Drone ‘Poseidon’

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia has successfully tested a new strategic weapon — a nuclear-powered underwater drone known as Poseidon.

Speaking at a meeting with veterans who fought in the Ukraine war, Putin described the weapon as having “no equal in the world.” The Poseidon drone, according to Russian officials, is capable of carrying nuclear warheads and can operate deep under the sea like an underwater missile.

A senior member of the Russian parliament claimed the weapon could “disable an entire state,” highlighting its potential destructive power.

Originally unveiled in 2019, Poseidon has long been considered one of Russia’s most secretive and ambitious military projects. Russian media have reported that the drone could reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour (120 mph) and move along a constantly shifting path — making it nearly impossible to intercept.

This announcement comes just days after Moscow revealed that it had also tested the Burevestnik, a nuclear-powered cruise missile said to have an “unlimited range.” President Putin commented that the technology was so advanced that experts were still debating “what category of weapon it truly belongs to.”

Defense analysts say both weapons are part of Russia’s broader strategy to develop next-generation nuclear systems capable of evading Western missile defenses. However, Western officials have expressed skepticism, saying such claims could be part of Moscow’s psychological and geopolitical messaging campaign.

As tensions remain high amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, the latest test adds a new dimension to Russia’s expanding nuclear arsenal — and to global security concerns.
