Kabul/New Delhi: Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi is expected to make a potentially historic visit to India soon, following the temporary suspension of his travel ban by the UN Security Council Committee, according to international media reports.
The visit is anticipated between October 9 and 16, marking the first official trip by a senior Afghan Taliban official to India since the group regained power in August 2021.
Before the Taliban takeover, India maintained close ties with the former Afghan government, but shut down its embassy in Kabul after the group’s return to power. A year later, India reopened a technical mission for limited humanitarian engagement.
Reports suggest that Muttaqi will first attend a multilateral meeting in Russia, featuring representatives from Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, India, and Central Asian states, where participants will discuss Afghanistan’s political and security situation.
Afghan political analyst Hikmatullah Hikmat said the visit holds strategic importance for the Taliban government, emphasizing Afghanistan’s need to strengthen regional political, economic, and trade relations to improve its global standing.
So far, only Russia has officially recognized the Taliban government, while India maintains limited and cautious engagement with Kabul.
