Pakistan

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority’s (PEMRA) notification on court proceedings reporting ban has also been challenged in Sindh High Court (SHC).

The court has approved the petition for immediate hearing. A two-member bench headed by SHC chief justice will hear the case today.

The petition was filed by Ameen Anwar, Shoukat Korai and others making PEMRA, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and others respondents.

Petition stated that PEMRA issued the notification on court reporting ban on May 21, 2024, however, PEMRA rules allow the live court reporting.

It was contended that authority meeting wasn’t called before putting ban on court reporting.

Petition argued that court reporters’ opinion weren’t taken into consideration under PEMRA laws.

Petition mentioned that the PEMRA’s decision to ban court reporting has violated the Article 8,9,10,18,19 and 25 of the constitution.

It is pertinent to note that PEMRA’s notification about ban on court hearing reporting has also been challenged in Lahore High Court and Islamabad High Court.
